My First MIBF and All The Feels

Sunday, September 25, 2016

Manila International Book Fair happens every year on the month of September. Ever since I learned about this event back in 2013 (I think), I have always wanted to come to the event and be drowned by tons of books. The said event happened from September 14-18, and this year, I was there, though it was only the last day of 5 days still I was able to attend the fair. Another special thing about this event was having my latest self-published book, Chasing an Elusive Dream, available at the fair (Yay!). It was only 7 copies and I was glad they were sold out. I knew some who bought a copy or two through social media, thank you, thank you! ^ - ^

#AllTheFeels was held also on the last day of the event (another reason why I chose the 18th to attend the fair). Live readings happened and swooned all the readers and writers who filled in the entire room. Gio Gahol as always never failed to deliver kilig. Hehe. Migs, Gab and Gracielle were awesome.

Also the announcement of winners in Precious Pages Movie Making Contest was held at the stage event. Congrats to all!

Wait! There's more! Another event to look forward to this coming October is the #FeelsFest, which is set to swoon all of the humans with feelings.

And as planned, I will launch a new book, Once Summer Days, hopefully. ^o^

Aren't you excited? Well, I am nervous, really nervous! (sigh, hehe)

Excerpt from The Retreat by Yeyet Soriano, feel the thrill and mystery! 👊🏽

The Trip
Simon
“I’m getting too old for this,” he whispered to himself. Simon was blindfolded, heading God knows where, via an air-conditioned van. He was sure he wasn’t alone, but they had been instructed not to talk. He wasn’t going to start breaking the rules now.
But he shouldn’t complain, because he agreed to this. He signed all the paperwork. I should have asked a lawyer to check them out, he thought belatedly. The invitation was just too good to pass up, and the danger and uncertainty attached to it appealed to his adventurous side. The organizers knew him, knew his background, and yet they still invited him.
“What the hell, I need to know what happens next . . . ,” he told himself, and at sixty years old, with his spanking new senior citizen’s card in his wallet, this might be the last big adventure of his life.

Rodney
She was excited and scared at the same time. She felt the familiar feeling of flying, so she was sure she was on a plane. Going to where, she wasn’t sure. After the two-hour van ride, they were ushered into a plane. She still had a blindfold on, and she was excited. Someone helped her up the steps and strapped her in. Something big was going to happen, she could feel it. The anticipation was in every pore of her body, and her heart was beating fast.

Philip
Philip wondered what the people back home would think when they found out he had gone on a trip without letting them know. He was sure there would be some kind of commotion. Not that he would be missed, specifically, but . . . well, they would need to know where he could be found. The attraction of this retreat for Philip, apart from the deal and the money, was the chance to disappear, at least for a while. To regroup. He needed to regroup, desperately. Plus, there was Stella, of course. An opportunity he just couldn’t pass up.
He felt the spray of water on his face. After the land and the air trip, he was now on a boat, going who knows where. Not too fast, but still pretty fast enough that the sea water sprayed his face from time to time.

Maggie
This is it, Maggie thought, when the motor of the boat stopped. After hours of travel, she had arrived where the retreat was going to be held. Her last manuscript copy was in her bag, with the required seven copies already submitted before the trip started, and although it hurt to write it, she knew she had to confront it when the time came for the reading. She would also need to deal with her gut feeling about this whole exercise and how she had a sneaking suspicion that this was all staged to get her here, at this point.
Well, I am ready, Maggie thought. Bring it on.

#HeistClub: The Launch

Sunday, June 12, 2016

Let’s write Crime! Filipino writers were challenged to write tales of dark pathways and mysterious psyches, misdemeanor and trouble, dread and doubt.

#HeistClub was an online workshop facilitated by Mina V. Esguerra in the last quarter of 2015. The class was organized by Bronze Age Media and sponsored by Buqo and Enderun’s The Study.

Each crime story had to be set in the Philippines, and it had to be written in English.  Each story should pave the way for a series, so it should be Case #1, with the next cases in the works for subsequent release. A foreign language needed to be incorporated into the story,  with our sponsor,  Enderun providing writers with free translation services.

The following mentors gave invaluable tips and lessons to the writers during the course of the workshop: Jennifer Hillier, F.H. Batacan, R.J. Taduran, Kevin Uy, Juliet Grames, and Andrea Pasion-Flores.

In the end, sixteen crime stories were produced.  They were released in three ebook bundles on the Buqo application early this year. The bundle names are: What We Fear, Why We Run, and What We Hide.

#HeistClub: Why We Run
·         Bayawak’s Trail by Justine Camacho-Tajonera
·         The Fraud Hunter Book 1: Chasing an ATM Schemer by Racquel Sarah A. Castro
·         The Retreat by Yeyet Soriano
·         Come With Me by Michael Recto
·         Inertia by Sette Luis

#HeistClub: What We Fear
·        Till Death Do Us Apart by Irene Recio
·         Soul Makers by Jee Ann Guibone
·         Classified by Georgette S. Gonzales
·         High Stakes by Ana Valenzuela
·         Dressed to Kill by Cassandra Javier

#HeistClub: What We Hide
·         Snakehead by Bianca Mori
·         Sampaguita by Mark Manalang
·         Let’s Play Murder by Farrah F. Polestico
·         Corpus Delicti by Porcupine Strongwill
·         The Flame Squad: Sly Prince by Jessica E. Larsen
·         The Gung Ho Lady by Arlene Manocot

On June 25, 2016, at 6:00 to 9:00 PM at Enderun’s The Study, located at 4th Floor, Podium, Ortigas Center, the sixteen stories will be officially launched to the public.  From the time they were released in their ebook bundles, some of the authors have refined, updated and enhanced their respective stories for release as stand-alone novels/novellas in multiple platforms: Buqo, Kindle, Smashwords, and print.
